Belief Busters - busting beliefs not ghosts

Let me begin by apologising. It has been a number of weeks since my last confession - I mean last blog. I went back to my home town to see family and friend and the following week my best friend came over to visit for the weekend so while my thoughts have been with you I did not have the physical time to put pen to paper or finger to key if that makes sense.

Now that that is all done and dusted lets move on to the next instalment of the series.

In the last blog we had a look at re-framing. The idea that you can alter your frame of reference for each situation, seeing each event from multiple angles. Once you have done this you can then CHOOSE the angle or frame that will empower and fulfil you the most - removing frustration and tendency to see yourself as the victim in the situation.

So how did you go? Did you practice? And did you start to become aware of how your mind will automatically take you in certain directions when circumstances occur? Like I said this stuff is simple in theory but it’s not easy - you have literally let your brain get away with murder for too long - and it is murder - for a lot of people it has murdered their self-confidence, their relationships and their ability to explore and enjoy life fully. It’s time to take control - remember that you can control your brain and make it work for you or you can allow it to take over and do what it has always done, resulting in you getting what you have always gotten - which isn’t always lighting you up with excitement is it?

So today we are going to do an exercise which will give you the ability to take a limiting belief that you have- strip it of it’s power and then replace it with an alternative belief that will serve you and create the freedom that you want in that area of you life. Sound good?

Belief Buster

Now for this exercise you will need a piece of paper and a pen - this is not to record the whole process but you may need to take down notes of some of the sub-modalities. As with all of the exercises that we do they are designed to be completed at high speed so that you can confuse your brain and re-pattern the information in the was that YOU choose.

1. Take a belief about yourself or a situation that you would like to change. Take a deep breath in, allowing every muscle in your body to relax. Breathe out and as you do you will begin to notice that your eyes to close as you relax deeply. Allow your sub-conscious mind to take you to a situation where you experienced that limiting belief. And it doesn’t matter if your mind takes you there straight away or in a little while what is important is that it will get there in the time frame that it feels is right for you. Now that you’ re there begin to notice how you represent that experience. Is it a picture or a movie? Are you associated and seeing the situation through your own eye or are you seeing yourself in the event? Is there colour? How large is the picture or movie? Is there sound and if so what kind of sound? A voice? Your own perhaps? And how does it feel? Are there particular sensations involved? If so where in your body are they located and how would you describe them? Do they have a weight or size? Now once you have become aware of them come back and write down what you experienced or became aware of.

2. Now that we have these details its important that we do something that we refer to in NLP as a state break - our body will be filled with the sensations that we just created so we want to break them away so that we do not contaminate the next state that we create. This can be anything from jumping up and down, trying to remember your phone number backward or spell a difficult word - anything that will take your mind of what we just did. Got it? Are you now back to neutral? Lets move on then.

3. Now take a belief that you no long believe is true. This can be anything that you once believed whole heartedly and now know with 100% conviction is incorrect. Struggling to find one? How about when you believed in Santa or the Easter Bunny?

4. Repeat step one for this belief and become aware of how you represent it. Once you have done this write it down. Have a look at they two and see how they differ.

5. Now that we have this information the fun begins - remember we need to do this as fast as possible to confuse the brain. When we start the idea is not to fully relive the initial belief again but to to take a quick snap shot and change it. We are going to take the limiting belief and change the sub-modalities to align with the list we found in step three and four. So if your ‘belief no longer true’ was in black and white and your limiting belief was in colour you will now change it to black and white or if your limiting belief involved a movie of the event and you were seeing it through you own eyes and the ‘belief no longer true’ was a still picture that you were seeing yourself in - this is what you would change your limiting belief to. Take a quick second to have a look at your notes - we are not changing one sub-modality at a time you will change them all in a split second so you need to know what you are changing and what you will end up with.

6. Start with your limiting belief and remember not to dwell on it and proceed with lightening speed. Push it off into the distance and quickly bring it back with the new sub-modalities. In that moment you bring it back I want you to click your fingers and say loudly ‘TWACK’ - it may feel silly but you are alone and no one will hear - just trust me it interrupts the brain - which is what we want. Remember that you are pushing the belief away with the old sub-modality coding into the distance and pulling it back the new coding. Do this 10 times at high speed - out with the old - ‘TWACK’ in with the new. Each time you do it should be less than a second - we want it that fast.

7. Now that you have done that how do you feel? Maybe a little confused or light headed? If you do that’s a good thing - your brain is struggling to figure out what happened. If you don’t - don’t make it mean something or create a map as it has likely still worked. Take a moment to think about the limiting belief. How you feel about it now? Does it feel like the truth anymore or has there been a shift? If it still feels the same that’s ok - simply go back to step 6 and do it again - remember speed is the key. Ensure that you are changing the sub-modalities so that the limiting belief has the same modalities as the belief you not longer believe to be true. Once you feel different we can move on.

8. Now there is no point in just changing a belief - we want to replace it for the exercise to be more effective. Find a belief that you know is true with every ounce of your being. Something like the grass will always grow or that the sun will rise in the morning - what ever you believe most powerfully. Note the sub-modalities and how this occurs for you.

9. Now what is a belief that you replace the limiting belief with that will provide you with more power?  Remember it needs to be stated positively - not ‘I don’t want to’ or ‘I want to LOSE’ - it needs to be about you wanting to gain something or that you have the resources etc. When you pick that belief notice how it occurs to you...right now it may not feel right or the picture may not be clear - it’s likely that you don’t believe it just yet.

10.  We are now going to do the same thing as we did in step 6 where we take how this new belief is currently coded - send it off into the distance and snap it back with all of the same sub-modalities of the belief from step eight that you believe to be 100% true. Again with speed, the click and the loud “TWACK’! Do it 10 times as quickly as possible.

 11. Again take a moment to think of your new belief. How does it occur to you? As the truth? If so perfect. If it still feels a little uncertain repeat the above step 10 times with lightening speed and check again.

And there you have it just one of the belief changing techniques that NLP offers. I hope you have fun with it and that it works for you. Give it a try. Although there are a few steps involved they are quite simple and should take you less then 5 minutes to go through the whole lot.
